Iron Widow
“The entitled assholes of the world are sustained by girls who forgive too easily.”
Long Story, Short
In a fantastical world of fighting robots and an overpowering patriarchal system, 18-year-old Zetian is ready to burn it all down, even if it leads to her end. As she climbs the ranks of the pilots that fight against an alien force outside the walls of Huaxia, Zetian discovers that there might be more than just revenge in her future.
Tell Me About It
Fighting the patriarchy with giant, spirit-powered robots? I'm in.
It may be a lot of terminology and moving parts, but the systems built in Zhao's world unfold logically with the character's development... that's also why I won't try to summarize it here! Just think: otherworldly creatures, spiritual powers, and action-packed battles.
The fantasy world takes elements from Chinese history and mythology. Zhao imagines a place with monsters and spiritual energy that is as beautiful as it is complex. The best part of her writing is her incredible ability to describe battle scenes, making them capture your imagination.
I love Zetian's unfaltering will, and she never compromises her strength in the face of powerful men. She is the definition of a kick-ass woman. But she was also written as a whole person who is loving, open, and determined. Her love story is beautiful but definitely not traditional.
This book is a great addition to any fantasy lover's bookshelves, especially those that appreciate the use of Chinese cultural influences.
