The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
“It’s always been fascinating to me how things can be simultaneously true and false, how people can be good and bad all in one, how someone can love you in a way that is beautifully selfless while serving themselves ruthlessly.”
Long Story, Short
This novel is a wonderful way to jump into the glamour past of the golden age of movies. There's drama, love, secrets - everything a starlet needs to become legendary.Tell Me About It
If you want a peek into old Hollywood, this novel is it.For me, this novel was the much-needed launching pad into books with great writing. After feeling burnt out from huge, world-building series, this book's glamour and mystique reminded me why I love the art of effective storytelling.
Evelyn is a complex woman that I liked and disliked all at once, which I think makes her all the more interesting. The other characters in her stories felt authentic, making me feel the same emotions Evelyn does as she struggles with her relationships through the Hollywood press lens. I really appreciated not being able to guess the twist! And while I was entertained by everything Evelyn had to tell, having the undercurrent of mystery really kept me engaged in the story.
The writing was captivating and never felt too slow or too fast, and truly felt curated to each character. I'd say Evelyn's world felt tangible and the people intricate.
This is good, old-fashioned storytelling, and I couldn't recommend it enough!
